About This Section

Gnosticism was not only a theology — it was a practice. Gnostic communities had rituals (baptism, the bridal chamber), symbols (the serpent, the cross of light), meditation practices, and initiatory structures. This section covers how Gnostics actually practised their tradition in antiquity and how contemporary Gnostic communities do so today.

Ancient Gnostic practice ranged from elaborate sacramental rituals (Valentinian bridal chamber rites) to simple contemplative reading of texts (the Gospel of Thomas tradition). What all Gnostic practice shared was an orientation toward inner transformation — gnosis was not a doctrine to be believed but an experience to be achieved, and every practice was in service of that achievement.
